Wisconsin State Horse Council Judges Certification Program
The Certified Judges Program was developed from a need in the horse show industry for better qualified judges in Wisconsin Open, All Breed, and 4-H shows. Through a joint effort of the University of Wisconsin Extension and the WSHC, the first two-day Judging Seminar was held in 1979.
The current Program is now administered through WSHC, with the Judges Seminar being held in the spring of each year. The criteria to obtain, and maintain, a WSCH certified judges card continues to be updated through input from judges, show committees, trainers, owners, and exhibitors.
In 2005, all WSHC Certified Judges were required to have two performance evaluations on file for the calendar year. These evaluations were to be completed by the show committee and sent in to the WSHC office in Columbus. Feedback will be shared with the Judges in early January.
Beginning in 2006, this practice has been expanded to better enhance the professional growth of Certified Judges. An average composit score from the ratings collected on all Evaluation forms received will be available online. Any comments from the Evaluation forms will not be posted, but will be shared with the judge at the end of the year.
It is important to keep in mind that the Evaluation Form should be filled out as honestly as possible and should not be used to air grievances of an individual nature.
This form is part of a process designed to assist the Judges in their continuing professional development, so criticism should be done in a constructive manner, not a destructive manner.
In 2006 and forward, unsigned evaluation forms will not be used in the calculation of the composite average score.
Questions on this procedure may be directed to the program committee by email or via phone to 920-623-0393.
The Evaluation form may be downloaded or requested by calling the WSHC office, 920-623-0393. It has been consolidated to a single page form for greater ease of use. Evaluations are only accepted for the current calendar year.
Please note that evaluations on Judge Candidates acting as junior judges should only be completed by the senior judge. See the criteria for specifics on senior judge eligibility. Three evaluations are required on a junior judge.
Certified Judges will have the option of completing a self Profile, which includes the number of shows judged the previous calendar year. The profile are available online on the Judges Directory for show committees to review when selecting a judge for their show. Judges may submit their completed Profile form to the WSHC office by mail or by fax to 920-623-0583.
